Unlicensed WiMAX!

Welcome to Unlicensed WiMAX!

I started Unlicensed WiMAX because there's a lot of confusion... and not a lot of solid information... about the subject of WiMAX technology used in license-exempt spectrum (unlicensed is a term more widely recognized, hence the title).

There are a number of products that purport to be "WiMAX" that operate in license-exempt spectrum, especially the 5.x GHz bands, and even some that operate in the 4.9 GHz public safety band. But such products are not true WiMAX.

To be true WiMAX products:

  1. An official "profile" for a particular portion of spectrum and some basic technical characteristics (channel size, FDD/TDD, etc.) must be created by the WiMAX Forum.
  2. A number of vendors must create products that purport to comply with the profile; there has to be a minimum number of products available for interoperability to "matter".
  3. A product that conforms to the profile must be submitted for interoperability testing at a testing facility officially sanctioned / certified / blessed by the WiMAX Forum.
  4. The product must pass the interoperability testing.
  5. Only then can the product be called, officially, "WiMAX"; the WiMAX Forum is both an interoperability test and a branding campaign.

All current "WiMAX" products that operate in license-exempt spectrum... all of them... fail this checklist at Point 1 - to date, there is no WiMAX Forum profile for using WiMAX in any license-exempt spectrum.

Until and unless a product meets all five points above, any product to date that purports to be WiMAX operating in license-exempt spectrum does not and can not offer any guarantee of interoperability, and thus offers no investment protection. Such products need to be considered proprietary.

Vendors fudge this a great extent and, when pressed, will concede the above points, and offer some (weasel-wording) "assurances" about the lack of real WiMAX compliance:

  1. Their license-exempt spectrum "WiMAX" product is fully compliant with IEEE 802.16d-2004 and "thus" will interoperate with any other product similarly compliant. This has some validity as 802.16d-2004 includes the 5.8 GHz license-exempt band.
  2. That they've conducted private interoperability testing "plugfests" with other major vendors.
  3. "Trust Us" - we're big enough and our systems are "high-end" enough that a firmware upgrade can fix any identified incompatibilities or issues or "Our systems are essentially Software-defined", so fixing problems is "just a firmware upgrade".

Point 1 fails because, as was vividly proven with 802.11 (no suffix - the original IEEE Wireless Local Area Network specification), it's quite possible to be fully compliant with a specification, and utterly unable to interoperate with another product that also claims to be "fully compliant with" said specification. Remember - "compliance" with a specification is purely in the "eye of the creator". While it's possible for an objective third party to certify compliance of a product / system against a specification... in practice, that rarely happens. (802.11 only succeeded, and wildly, when 802.11b was created with one and only one "physical layer" - Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) and the Wi-Fi Alliance began certifying interoperability and granting [and policing the use of] the Wi-Fi brand and logo.

Point 2 fails because private plugests are... private! They don't have to disclose what was tested against what, and even if successful, what was tested was particular products / systems at particular firmware revisions. Once those products and associated firmware is updated, the plugfest results are essentially moot - you have no way of knowing if any two particular License-exempt "WiMAX" systems will in fact interoperate.

Point 3 fails because, while you hope that your particular product will be supported by the vendor in perpetuity, the BWIA industry is rife with abandoned products... and even orphaned products when the vendor went out of business. One vivid example is Wi-LAN who offered a product line that used OFDM in the early days of WiMAX, that they assured buyers would be software-upgradeable to full WiMAX compliance. As I understand it, that never happened, and Wi-LAN soon afterwards ceased manufacturing of actual systems.

Your only real investment protections for License-exempt WiMAX systems, it seems to me, are:

  1. True, blessed, official WiMAX Forum certification / compliance / branding of a particular product / system.
  2. A vendor big / stable / "solid" enough, trusted enough that can offer very solid guarantees (like, in writing) of current and future interoperability.

So... there's lots to write about on the rapidly-growing subject of License-exempt / Unlicensed WiMAX. Feel free to write me with comments, suggestions, general feedback - anything - steve@stevestroh.net.

Thanks,

Steve

Here on more than 30 levels the player can test his logic and frustrate the plans of space terrorists those are graduated by the level of complexity from simple ones to those which can be passed only by a smart and attentive player.

You, as a future graduate of the Customs Academy, should be proud of having the honor to do practical work at one of the biggest freight-transport stations. Unfortunately, as the special services have reported, now intergalactic terrorists have decided to sabotage the work on the station through undermining the freight docks. But we are on the alert, only yesterday we were supplied with a lot of etheric scanners for examination the freight. But alas! our operator from the 13th dock committed a mistaken while examination. And with your own eyes you saw his remains being washed from the floor. So, you will occupy his place for the period of practice work.

If you were sleeping in the lecture where they were explaining how the etheric detector’s constructed, I’ll tell you: the beam that runs through illegal freight is reflected aside in specific color. It’s yellow, if there are explosives, and it’s red, green or dark blue, if there’s smuggling. You should mark explosives with flags, our sappers will demine them, and you should also confiscate contraband, and a premium is fixed for it. But remember, the time you have to make the examination in is limited.

Yes, one thing more. Sure, you can open all containers one after another, but if you open a container without an illegal freight, you’ll be imposed a penalty. Not heavy, but not so that nice to pay.

Government wants to store all text, email and browsing data

The information will be used by police for crime
fighting, but also other government bodies such as health authorities
    and the Post Office
    .

    By Matthew Sparkes

The Government will store "a billion incidents of data exchange a
day" as details of every text, email and browsing session in the UK are
recorded under new proposals published yesterday.

The information will be made available to police forces in order to
crack down on serious crime, but will also be accessible by local
councils, health authorities and even Ofsted and the Post Office.

One example of crime prevention using the data given in the
consultation document is that of the Child Exploitation and Online
Protection agency, which targets sexual abuse of children.

"The vast majority of CEOP's work is by resolution of IP addresses,
e-mail addresses and increasingly mobile phone numbers. During the
period March to June 2008 CEOP identified 96 suspects (who have been
arrested) and safeguarded 30 children through the use of internet
related data," explained the consultation document, which goes on to
explain that petty crime and even instances of self harm will be
    tackled using the new measures.

Another example was given in which a UK citizen had been talking in
an internet chatroom about self-harming, when local police tracked down
his address via his IP number and ISP and intervened to save him.

However, the information will also be made available to local
councils, health authorities and other Government bodies such as Ofsted.

"The main reason for it is to assist in the investigation of crime,"
said a Home Office spokesperson. "Each local council can make a
decision for themselves on what is the most interest to them."

The move has attracted criticism from the Conservatives, however, including Dominic Grieve, the Shadow Home Secretary.

"Yet again the Government has proved itself unable to resist the
temptation to take a power quite properly designed to combat terrorism
to snoop on the lives of ordinary people in everyday circumstances
    ."

Everything You Wanted To Know About The GARMIN GPS NUVI 350

Ever found yourself lost trying to maneuver your way through downtown Ontario without a clue where you were? Or maybe you have taken one too many road trips that has landed you in an unknown destination... sure it's fun to not know your destination occasionally, but most of the time we are all in a hurry ' whether it is to be at a meeting, picking up the kids or trying to make a personal engagement with friends - maybe it's time to check out a new navigation system available to make your life a little easier.

One new product on the market destined to save you a lot of time and money navigating the streets alone is the GARMIN GPS NUVI 350. The NUVI 350 is not only an extremely stylish and slim lined navigation system it also has the ability to be an MP3 player, audio book player, JPEG picture viewer, clock with world time zone capabilities, currency converter, measurement converter, calculator and of course an anti theft device to deter anyone who might be interested in stealing this attractive addition to your car!

The NUVI 350 can be bought and used just about anywhere due to the preloaded City Navigator® NT street maps. Depending on your location for travel it is possible to insert a micro SD/SD data card with the designated country map to find your way happily out of any spot of bother you might find yourself in.

Some features of this hot little product include a 2.8" wide x 2.1" high screen with the total product size being 3.87" wide x 2.91" high. The screen features a nice QVGA color antiglare TFT with white backlight and also responds nicely to touch screen commands. The battery is a rechargeable lithium ion with 8 hours of life and can be continuously charged through the use of the vehicle power cable included in the NUVI 350 package. Further features include voice prompts, spoken street names, the options of either 2D or 3D map views, auto re route (fast off route options and recalculations for ETA), route setup (allowing you to achieve faster times, shorter distances and off road options), and route avoidance (if you are wanting to avoid tolls or freeways). Custom points of interest (POIs) is another strong feature which will alert you to when important town information is approaching such as safety cameras or school zones, ATMs, restaurants, and hotels.

Like all good technology these days the NUVI 350 is not just a navigation system and comes with additional accessories to boost your already highly efficient system including data cards, traffic receivers, accessory kits, adapters, antennas, cases and covers, memory, cables and mounts. Of all the accessories my favorite are the data cards which serve as travel and language guides. As the world seems to be getting smaller with regard to ease of travel, it seems a necessary option for technology to be able to be utilized in any part of the world. The SD data cards, relevant for the country you are traveling, can provide you with current travel information ' sites to visit, shops to wander through, and restaurants to eat in. The data is provided by Fodors who are one of the leading trip planning and information companies available. The language guides are equally as important as you visit new countries. The information is provided by Oxford University Press and contains comprehensive word and phrase banks and bilingual dictionaries! Global Positioning Systems (GPS) rely on a variety of satellites to assist you in figuring out where you are at any given time.

The one major benefit of buying an in-car GPS is so that you don't end up wasting time and money finding a location that should have ideally taken you perhaps only 20 minutes. The technology now available for these systems is getting better and better and the GARMIN GPS NUVI 350 is no exception, it is sitting comfortably in the market at the top of the range.

The GARMIN GPS NUVI 350 is also very competitively priced with the product having an average cost of $348.00 in the Canadian market. Although you will be able to find the NUVI 350 within most Canadian electronic stores the best way to quickly find this product and compare prices without visiting every shop in Canada is online.

    Choosing the Right Fishfinder

What to Consider When Choosing the Right Fishfinder
    By Scot Thorson

Fishing has come a long way since trial and error. Technology has made it much easier for fishermen to locate fish, this providing much better odds for success. There are a number of fish finders available on the market, and with the technological jargon and information, it can be tricky to find what you want.

Fish finders tend to come in two different display types. A Cathode Ray Tube (or CRT) and a Liquid Crystal Display (or LCD). CRTs have been declining in popularity; they are much like a television in their display screen and appearance. If you want to avoid glare, the screen must be placed in a shaded area. CRTs are best used for commercial fishermen and deep sea fishermen. For the everyday fisherman, an LCD screen is ideal; clarity is extremely good, you can read it in direct sunlight, and it comes in a wide range of prices. If you see the term TFT (Thin Film Transistor), this is simply a type of LCD screen that has gained in popularity due to its functionality and high-resolution.

A budget is something else you want to consider. The amount of fishing you do will be a big factor in deciding what you should buy. You can purchase fish finders that have colored screens or black and white screens. If you find yourself fishing a lot, then you are probably more willing to spend money on a high-quality fish finder. Should you fish only occasionally but still be interested in a fish finder, you may want to find something that costs less, but still performs well. Companies like Garmin and Eagle create high-quality fish finders that utilize waterproof LCD screens and offer both color and black and white. Color is better because it is much easier to distinguish between targets under the water, whereas black and white make all targets similar colors.

What about technical information, such as frequency? When you see kHz, this is the representation of frequency, which is used by the fish finder in the water in order to identify targets. You will not see specific fish, but rather areas fish may congregate, so depth can be important. A model that provides you with a mid-range frequency – between 80 to 125 kHz – should be ideal. Low-frequency is most useful in deep water with a wide range, high-frequency for a narrowed spot with more detail.

So what about manufacturers, is there currently a favorite amongst anglers? Not really, although you'll find Humminbird, Garmin, Lowrance, and Eagle dominating the shelves at your local sporting goods retailer. Each has a niche to fill, such as portability (Humminbird), GPS enabled (Garmin), cartography (Lowrance). Whether you want your unit to attach the boat or you don't even own a boat, there are lots of models to choose from. Just keep in mind what kind of fishing you do most often and narrow your search from there.

After that, keep your search simple and look for the things you want; price, potential depth (if you know how deep the lake or river can get), screen coloring, and size. Until you are more familiar with fish finders, you can avoid the extra bells and whistles and focus on the main purpose of the device; to find fish for you to catch.

    Free Reverse Cell Phone Lookup

Free Reverse Cell Phone Lookup Websites - Do They Exist? By David Down

    Is
it really possible to run a free reverse cell phone lookup on the
internet? Many of us have become disillusioned and frustrated in the
past with websites which appear to offer free products or services
online but in fact do not. Is this the case with cell phone lookups?

    Firstly
let us examine exactly what we mean by a phone number lookup. If you
have in your possession a residential phone number but no idea who the
number belongs to or what address it relates to you can use a "reverse
lookup" service to find out those details. This can obviously be very
useful in situations where you have lost contact with someone but still
have a record of their phone number, or simply wish to verify who owns
the number before mistakenly phoning the wrong number. There are many
places you can perform such residential and business phone lookups
online for free, including toll-free numbers.

    However a problem
arises when you need to run a reverse lookup on a cellular phone as the
free directories do not contain any such numbers. Similarly they do not
contain fax numbers as this information is only held by the carriers
and telecommunications companies. Do these records exist, and are they
    free?

The good news is there are websites which claim to offer
large numbers of cell phone numbers, but they are not free. These
websites naturally have to pay for access to some of this information,
and go to the considerable trouble of pulling all the various resources
together in one place, and as a result you will be charged a small fee
before you can access the lookup databases. However the fee is a
one-off payment and with some websites you can run as many searches as
you like once you have access, with others they offer a single lookup
for a lower fee. The records they claim to offer include cell owner
details, address history, carrier details, and the phone connection
status. It is also worth noting that the databases offered by each
company differ to some degree, but most include cell phones and often
residential, business, toll-free, even pagers, and these websites say
your searches are guaranteed legal and confidential.

    In addition
to reverse lookups there are also similar websites which offer access
to information such as background checks and background reports, people
finder databases, bankruptcies, liens, public records databases
including births, deaths, marriages, divorces and adoptions, sex
offender records, police records, and much more. These sites operate in
the same way, offering access to specific types of information for a
set fee, however it should be noted that you will not receive access to
such information as part of your cell phone lookup site membership.

    I
have seen websites claiming to offer free cell lookups, but they always
lead eventually to the paid sites in the end, even allowing people to
search for free and then charging to view the results. It is the sad
truth that the only place where you are likely to find detailed reverse
cell records is within the legitimate paid directories. In conclusion,
the answer is no, free cell phone lookups do not currently exist.
However if you really want to access such records then I believe paying
a small fee is a price worth paying.

telecommunications articles and resources covering all aspects of cell
phone safety, security, accessories and shopping

Step 1 Search Through Free White Pages Listings

If you've run your free search and found that the number is a landline phone number, run a search at one of the many free reverse landline phone number services on the web. A few of the most popular are Infospace.com, Anywho.com, and WhitePages.com.

So, to find out who owns a cell phone number, you'll have to get creative, here are some free searches that you can use... but if you don't find a number here, you'll probably need to buy a reverse cell phone number lookup (they average about $15-$25 per number or $40+ for memberships). Choose right fishfinder
